Trash Day Means I Get Rewarded When I Recycle
There is nothing quite like trash day.Especially trash day in the ghetto.
I believe in recycling, but sadly most people in my town do not bother dispite it being a service provided for us and there are special recycling buckets anybody can get from the collection agency.
In the wee hours of the late night slash morning, i will often go retrieving recyclables from the top, cleaner part of the trash bins, to put in recycling buckets. It makes me feel good knowing i'm taking them out of landfills and especially, taking plastic away fromwhere it might very well end up incinerated, polluting our air ..
I got rewarded twice this week for being a scavenger.
First off, a few days ago I was coming home from a club and i saw a cardboard box full of classic rock CDs. (Okay there was a few hiphop ones but i kept them there.I'm not interested in that.It wasn't something old school and innocuous like Grand Master flash, it was the nasty stuff who who knows.)
I took home CDs by Neil Diamond (whom I have seen live, back when i was in high school.I got CDs by Elton John, Toto, Quiet Riot, Simon & Garfunkle, CSN (Crosby Stills and Nash),James Taylor, Abba and Foreigner.
I may give some away.I saw a Roy Orbison and a Righteous Brothers CD and one from Sade.but LOTS of Neil Diamond CDs.
I probably won't listen to most of this because as a songwriter I am restricting what music I get exposed to, so i don't accidentally plagiarize some line of melody or chord progression..
Now last night I was digging through the trash and something sparkly caught my eye-it was a fashion jewelry brooch that reminded me of those LeVian chocolate diamonds.Maybe some church lady dropped it in the trash. (Why can't they recycle? Are CHURCHES immune from being good stewards of the Earth and its resources? And people wonder why i have so many criticisms of organised religionS..... "by their works shall you know them"....yup...aint it the truth!
Why doesn't the church recycle?
I also found some pants hangers, which I use to hang up my miniskirts.I have so many and i like to use those closet extenders that let you hang up 5 or 6 hangers in the space of one.WHY do folks throw them away?Probably because people bought trousers and who hangs them up.
There was even sealed up whole skinless chicken breast still sealed in the package which I got out and tore up and I will feed that to the feral cats I leave food and water for (and I clean up trash and recyclables where they are to be a "good neighbor" and all that...)
When i was picking beer bottles out of the trash to recycle I saw 2 unopened bottles of Lea and Perrins Worchestershire Sauce/.......totally sealed bottle with the plastic wrap and everything...okay so it was a year expired......it has vinegar in it...it is not bad.....
I HATE wasting food. That is immoral I think.
We have found unopened undamaged canned vegetables these people WASTE.Even GIANT cans,6.6 POUND cans of green beans and of carrots. Those can be opened and put in Ziplock bags and frozen.
I have found clothes that are even seemingly washed (I always wash things in hot soapy water.I am a germophobe!).
Most clothes tends to be oversize. So i have set it aside to sell at a yard sale or flea market or something.
Sometimes i DO find my size.I wear childrens size tops, and otherwise the most petite sizes (2 and 3 in case anybody asks).
I may redesign an outfit, cut it up,sew it up,customise it so it will be something nobody else has.
Last month I plucked beautiful silver stiletto stripper shoes in my size...and 2 Cosmetology School workbooks, from the sidewalk when i was returning from some club....what is WRONG with people......
I can always use beauty school textbooks and reference info since i do hair on the side still.
People are so wasteful.Or else somebody got evicted or there was a roommate fight?I saw no name and address.
If you saw some of my "ground scores" and dumpster dives you would be impressed.
Or maybe you'd call me a trashpicker,I don't care.
I find change in the trash too.Damn right i pick it up.i wash it off,and I save it. I never know when I might need bus fare.Or if I';m buying a concert ticket and the total ends in say 55 cents like last time.I got exact change!
People are too wasteful.Even people who don't have much! I don't understand waste!
