Being a YouTuber Can Be Dangerous!
I had a scary experience when I made one of my YouTube videos last week.
It was a lovely warm sunny Spring day,a perfect beach day.I was stoked because i had a nice Visa gift card to spend, and the luck 2 days previously, to find a deep discount sale when I was purchasing a big bag of fresh roasted peanuts from Peanut World.
So with this knowledge in mind I went on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City with my laundry cart on wheels that I bring grocery shopping.Peanut World has a lot of fitness gear...things i have been wanting......
So I got a great punching bag and I got a jump rope, and bigger longer Pilates resistance bands for weight work....I got a medicine ball....i also got an abdominal roller...and a shower radio that's supposed to get TV audio but i don;t expect THAT to work here as I live at sea level and we require cable or satellite for TV reception.
I took my overflowing cart on to the beach, which was mostly deserted except for a few scattered walkers/sunbathers.
i always try to be as discrete as possible when filming but I understand that myself, I attract attention no matter what I do so I hope I am hidden and i run through it as quickly as possible while also looking and sounding relatively okay.
While I was doing my fitness gear unboxing in the shade of one of the beach chair and umbrella rental shacks on that beach, I got discovered by a menacing group of 6 juvemiles. They seemed like they could be family members.they might have been affiliated with a gang, based on their actions.First off WHY would people try to talk to someone who is filming?Audio will ruin what they are doing. That is rude!Who says the filmer knows how to edit that stuff out?Not all of us edit!Second off.Why is it ever fair for a group of people to challenge one lone individual to a fight?
And why must I feel obligated to engage these strangers in a conversation and interrupt MY filming?
I am running on battery and batteries only last so long, which is something I tried to tell them.
But they would rather threaten to kick my ass?
So now must I worry about my physical security when I go outside to make my YouTube videos?
Must i factor in a budget for this?
And isn't it ironic that I posted a Youtube video about concert and clublife security tips for patrons. Not thinking how there are other situations that can present us with vulnerabilities we should compensate for.
I know thew quality of that fitness gear unboxing was not my usual par BUT outdoor filming is a different animal from studio filming.I can control most of what goes on on set but remotely, I am subject to whatever happens in the Big Bad Outdoors.
So...getting back to the gang or bad family or whomever they were...whether they were locals of folks from Philadelphia....i suspect they were locals as they did not have outer wear on or carried.Out of towners should have outerwear with them unless it was left in a vehicle.
The ages of these perps was (I THINK) between 8 and 16.
And a different demographic than I am.
It was scary.I was chased off the beach...and i even lost my irreplaceable disposable REAL FILM CAMERA I had with me that had Joe Perry concert pictures I took from his show at the Borgata on April 20th!
PS I have my name and address sticker on that green and black FujiFilm camera..I HOPE a finder is considerate to drop it in a mailbox!
You ought to know it MEANS something to the owner!
PPS Be ware on the BEACH in Atlantic City.Once you are on the beach, the sand dunes hide you from the Boardwalk which is where most of the security, Ambassadors and Police patrol. So if you get beat up, robbed or worse NOBODY can help you.
Crimes happen on the beach.
Stay safe.Don't let them target you to
